How to Create a Brand Story for Your Blog in 7 Easy Steps

Your brand story is by far one of the most important brand components for your blog.

But what the heck even is a brand story? Why do you want one? And how do you create a brand story? This blog post should answer all of those questions.

What is a brand story?

A brand story is not just your logo and your colors. It’s the heart and soul of your brand. It tells the complete story of your brand.

In the end, everything that you do as a brand comes together to tell your brand story:

Everything you do, each element of your business or brand from the colors and texture of your packaging and business cards to the staff you hire is part of your brand story. Every element should reflect the truth about your brand back to your audience.

The Story of Telling

Your story tells people why you get up to do what you do every day. It tells them why they should care, and it tells them why they should trust you to help them do what you’re trying to do.

Why Create a Brand Story?

The Drum

There are a few different reasons why you want to create a brand story, and statistics is definitely one of them. People really want to consume great stories, and as a blogger you’re in the prime spot to provide them with exactly that.

The second reason you want to create a brand story is simply to differentiate and capture attention–much like why you want to brand your blog in the first place.

There are so many blogs out there, and one of the best ways to differentiate yourself and capture attention is not only through branding, but specifically through having that brand story. When people know your brand story, they know who you are and why you do what you do.

Which leads right into the third reason to have a brand story: to build connections and trust.

Stories are such a great way to connect with other people. When they hear your story, they feel like they know you, and they trust you because they know that you are there to help them.

Finally, you want to have a good brand story simply to guide what you do.

Once you know your story, you also know where you’re going, and that helps you decide what you should be doing next.

How to Create a Brand Story

Creating your brand story is actually super easy–all you need to do is answer a few questions!

1. What’s your purpose?

A brand purpose is essentially just your reason for being (besides just making money). Think about things like…

  • What is the ultimate purpose of your blog?
  • Why did you start it?
  • Why are you writing what you’re writing?

You also want to think about who you want to help:

  • Who specifically do you want to help?
  • How do you want to help them?
  • Why do you want help them?
  • What is your purpose in helping them?
  • What do you want to help them do?

All of these things come together to create your purpose.

2. What makes you unique?

The second question you want to ask yourself is what makes you unique?

Think about what unique take you have on things, and how you’re different from other bloggers in your niche.

Just remember that being unique isn’t just about being the only one who does something, though. It’s about being better and having a different take on things than everyone else does.

3. What is your blog’s personality?

Your blog’s brand personality is basically just how you talk and act and think as a brand.

One of the best ways to start figuring out your blog’s brand personality is to list 3-5 adjectives that describe it.

Words like adventurous, compassionate, practical, reliable, sincere, and witty are all good examples.

4. How do you want your readers to feel when they first land on your blog?

Do you want to have them feel happy? Do you want to feel them helped?

Again, just writing down 3-5 to describe how you’d like people to feel when they read your blog is a really great way to do this. A few examples might be:

  • excited
  • helped
  • grateful
  • empowered
  • motivated
  • refreshed

5. What are your brand values?

Your brand values are the things that you believe in so strongly that they drive what you do. So ask yourself:

What are the things that you personally value and what are the things that you value as a blogger? How do these things inform what you write?

6. What is your blog’s mission?

The next thing that you want to think about is your blog’s mission.

Your mission should communicate your beliefs and goals in just 1-2 short and sweet sentences.

For writing your blog’s mission statement, I highly suggest checking out another post of mine: how to write a mission statement that isn’t boring.

7. What is your brand story?

After you’ve answered all of the questions above, your brand story as a whole will become so ridiculously easy, because all you have to do is put those answers together.

In order to create a brand story all you really have to do is say who you are, what you do, and why you do it.

It really is as simple as that!
